Our first glimpse inside the Raw Spice Bar package for November
Everything that we received in our RawSpiceBar for November. This month’s flavor locale was “Pondicherry” and included 3 blends. Upon subscribing you can customize the flavors you receive to suit your diet and preferences. Which is a great benefit of the RawSpiceBar subscription
So what is all this stuff?
Our insert tells us about Pondicherry. Where there are many different flavor influences including one of our favorites… chai!
Our three blends are packaged brilliantly and they’re orange (all the hearts)
This blend contains cumin, coriander, turmeric, fenugreek, mustard seeds, cardamom, aleppo pepper, cayenne, nutmeg and cloves. There were two recipes included for this blend, the first was scrambled eggs.
The second recipe included was a Vadouvan Leek & Butternut Squash Soup – both looked quite tasty
Our second spice blend was a Peppercorn Chai that had all the makings of a warm and decadent treat! The first recipe included was a Peppercorn Masala Chai, a chai drink
And our other recipe was this Chai Spiced Apple Clafoutis. (keep reading to see this made). Clafoutis is a French dessert that is sprinkled with sugar and served lukewarm with cream, our interests are piqued!
This Unpumpkin Pie Spice is full of all those wonderful fall favorites like; ginger, cinnamon, allspice berries, star anise, and nutmeg. How yummy. The first recipe was none other than DONUTS!
Our second recipe is a spin on traditional Podicherry Cornbread, a Pumpkin Spiced Cornbread
Okay, so now what?
Now we bake! We settled on creating the Chai Spiced Apple Clafoutis because we love chai and we had all of the ingredients on hand.
We first preheat our oven and then combine milk, eggs, 6 tablespoons (of the 10 this requires) butter, vanilla, flour, sugar and salt in a small bowl.
Whisk together until smooth
Next, we melt the remaining butter in a skillet and add our apples, sugar, the Peppercorn Chai Seasoning and brandy (we subbed brandy for apple juice)
Cook for about 5 minutes or until apples are glazed
About 2 minutes into sauteeing them
And after 5 minutes!
Add half the batter to a greased pie pan and arrange the apple slices on top of it. (reserve juices). Pour over remaining batter and sprinkle with sugar.
Drizzle with reserved juices after baking until golden brown (about 20-30 minutes)
Our final result. This is delicious and a bit like bread pudding. The chai and pepper flavors are present but not overwhelming. This was a hit with both us parents and the kiddos!
So in summary
We look for three things in a subscription box; quality, curation, and presentation. The RawSpiceBar subscription is great for any budding cook who wants to delve into exotic flavors and spices. The presentation is great, everything is well packaged and comes exactly as it should. The quality is fantastic. These spices are fresh and made in small batches to ensure quality – and we love it!
Curation is phenomenal! The Podicherry Kit really does take us on a tasting tour. We love that they pick a place and really hone in on the flavors of that area. What a great gift for the cooks on your list!
