Here’s the Box Breakdown
Our first glimpse inside the Spice Breeze Subscription.
Everything that we received in our Spice Breeze Box. The September Quad Box included 8 spices as well as 4 recipes
So what is all this stuff?
This month’s spice selection! How beautiful is this!
The Tibs Kit includes the recipe for this Ethiopian dish as well as two spices to use in your recipe
The recipe call for lamb, beef or chicken and has a fresh vegetable mix for most of the rest of the dish
The reverse of the recipe card tells us about this dish and it’s convenient prep time!
The first Tibs spice packet contains Cardamom, Cumin, Nigella and Fenugreek and the second includes Cayenne, Coriander, Rue, Cardamom, Cumin, Garlic, Fenugreek, Onion, Nutmeg, Cinnamon, Salt, Ginger, Long Pepper, Cumin, Nigella, Basil
Rougail Spice Kit
This spice comes from La Reunion Island.. a cultural melting pot
The recipes is very simple and includes sausage, tomatoes, lettuce and rice with some optional add ins like onion, garlic and orange.
The reverse tells us a little more in detail about this spicy dish
The spice packets for these are a lot less complex than the Tibs packets. The first baggie contains a mix of thyme, turmeric and bay leaves and the second packet contains just Makrut Lime Leaves
Rendang Spice Kit
This Indonesian Spice Kit sounds so yummy!
This is one of the more difficult recipes included this month and contains a mixture of protein, rice, coconut milk and eggplant
Voted by CNN Readers as one of the most delicious meals in the world – typically slow cooked we think you’ll still find this shortened version tasty!
Our first Rendang Packet contains a mixture of Lemongrass (yum), Galangal, Makrut Lime Leaves, Coriander and Turmeric and the second is just Red Chili Flakes
Rokt med Pepparrotssas
We were sort of excited to see a Swedish recipe included in our kit because that’s completely new for us!
We were also delighted to see that we had all the ingredients for this on hand!
This is a traditional Scandinavian dish and is served typically with a smoked or boiled protein.
Our first packet is just simply powdered horseradish and our second is dill weed
Okay so now what?
While our meat and vegetables are cooking we make a rue from flour and butter
Meanwhile our meat and potatoes cook!
We get our Pepparrotssas spices ready at this point
After our potatoes have cooked, we add 1 cup of the water from them to our rue
Then we add in very slowly a half cup of cream
After that has been added we mix our horseradish with a bit of water to smoothen it out
Once our mixture is off the heat we can then add the horseradish mixture to the pan
Plated! This was a nice creamy dish! We made some collards to go along with it although it was suggested that we make carrots with the potatoes as well
If you want more of a pungent horseradish flavor you can serve this dish cold… or you can do what we did and just add more horseradish!
So in summary
We look for three things in a subscription box; quality, curation, and presentation. The Spice Breeze Subscription is a really nice way to expand your palette and learn of new recipes and spices each month. We love the pricing options and think there is something here for everyone. The presentation is great, everything arrives beautifully. The quality is amazing – these blends are fantastic as well as tasty. And curation is excellent! They do a lot of legwork to get unique recipes each month and coordinate them with the appropriate spice blends! We love Spice Breeze!
