Here’s the Box Breakdown

first look in the obachan box

Our first glimpse inside the Obachan Box

what's in the obachan box

Everything that we received in our Obachan Promo Box. This is a gorgeous collection of items!

So what is all this stuff?

Our box inserts

We love the little hand written note!

Porcelain Plate

This pretty porcelain plate has a “Tokusa” pattern which is made to look like grass and is one of the most popular patterns in Japanese porcelain. We think this would make a wonderful ring dish!

Fish Chopsticks

These natural wood chopsticks have a cool fish design on them. Particularly ironic if you are eating sushi

The design is simple yet striking

The tips are also textured to make gripping food simpler.

Yakimochi Chopstick Rest

The Yakimochi (grilled rice cake) is a traditional Japanese snack. Here we see it in the form of a chopstick rest.

We think this is super cute!

Seigaiha Hand Towel

This Tenugui is a Japanese staple and has the traditional “Seigeiha” wave pattern (we love this and instantly recognize it for an authentic Japanese product).

The pattern signifies good luck and the towel is multi-purpose and a great addition to this box!

This handle and ball game originally came about as a drinking game (which is probably the coolest story ever). We’ve seen these in the American market but never in a fun plastic form like this one!

We actually got the ball onto the handle once so far (totally sober though)

Bamboo Bookmark

We weren’t sure of the significance of the three symbols on this bookmark (Mt. Fuji, a hawk and an eggplant) but in Japan to dream of all three is a an auspicious symbol.

We always have our head in a book so this is a nice item to receive!

So in summary

We look for three things in a subscription box; quality, curation, and presentation. The Obachan Box is a beautifully put together box of authentic Japanese items. The presentation is great and everything arrives perfectly. The quality is fantastic and for the costs of $35.99 we received $50 in items. Curation is stunning. We love the way the colors pulled together to create a wonderfully aesthetic experience.
