Here’s the Box Breakdown
Everything that we received in our Piquant Post Package for June. This month we’re going to Zanzibar!
So what is all this stuff?
Our first recipe is inspired by Kombuchari a popular salad served in East Africa. It gets it’s very trademark flavor from Berbere, a spice blend that is commonly used in the many recipes throughout the Horn of Africa.
This recipe is simple to create and our spice blend includes; onion, cayenne pepper, paprika, New Mexico chili, coriander, cardamom, ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon, black pepper, allspice and cloves.
Seasoned with Tamarind (a tree that produces seed pods with a sticky, sour fruit) this stew is a fusion dish (much of Tanzanian cuisine is). It blends curry and tamarind together to create a deliciously authentic dish that you can customize to your own liking!
Our spice blend includes; tamarind, coriander, turmeric, ginger, cardamom, black pepper, cinnamon, fenugreek and cayenne pepper.
This recipe for rice pilaf goes against that grain… (see what we did there?) Because Zanzibar is part of the “spice islands” it’s dishes still have retained much of the same flavors like nutmeg, cloves, black pepper and cinnamon. This pilaf uses those same spices to lend this hearty dish a warm and comforting flavor.
Our spice blend includes; cumin, cardamom, star anise, black pepper, cayenne, cinnamon, cloves, turmeric, cayenne, coriander, ginger and smoked paprika.
Our final recipe and the one we decided to create for the month is perfect for us because it involves our favorite drink EVER! Much like the food of Zanzibar the coffee of Zanzibar is similarly spiced and typically served with milk and sugar (we prefer ours black though).
This blend includes; cardamom, ginger, cloves and cinnamon.
This recipe is so darn easy, all you have to do is add 1/4 teaspoon of this seasoning per cup, using whatever method you’d typically use to make coffee. We use a french press, here is our coffee… it was delicious!
So in summary
We look for three things in a subscription box; quality, curation and presentation. The Piquant Post Subscription is a great way to keep yourself creative in the kitchen and it’s super affordable. The presentation is great, everything arrives perfectly. The quality is amazing – we love that each spice is hand blended for the best flavor. Curation is fantastic, they really do their best to give you a slice of local flavor and they hit the Zanzibar package out of the park!
